GARDASIL
The new vaccine against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
Gardasil is now available at Bath & Bristol Private Vaccination Clinic.
The clinic is open on Saturday mornings throughout the year. The cost of
Gardasil is £350 for the complete course of 3 vaccinations. The vaccine is
given over six months.
Gardasil protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18. It is these types of
virus that have been associated with cervical cancer, pre-cancerous lesions and
genital warts.
These four types of virus are responsible for 70% of causes of cancer and 90%
of causes of genital warts.
HPV is a very common virus and is passes via sexual contact.
The vaccine is licensed for girls and women aged from 9 – 26 years old.
Ideally women should be vaccinated before they become sexually active and
possibly exposed to HPV. Gardasil may protect you against viruses you have
already been exposed to, but at the moment there is no test available to check
to which viruses you may have been exposed.
Gardasil is very well tolerated and has very few side-effects, but may cause
a local reaction around the injection site.
We do not know at the moment how long the vaccine will protect for, but the
most recent research suggests it will protect for at least 5 years. It may be
that a booster will be needed in the future.
TB Vaccinations
Worldwide Tuberculosis (TB) kills around 2 million people every year. It most
commonly affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body such as
lymph nodes, bones, joints, kidneys and brain. Vaccination is recommended for
those who will be travelling for more than 1 month or going to live in countries
with a high prevalence of TB (if they have not previously been immunized.) It
takes up to two months for the vaccination to be effective.
Vaccination is a two-stage process. You will require an initial test (the
Mantoux test) to confirm your suitability for the vaccination (BCG) followed a
few days later by the BCG vaccination itself.
