We have introduced two Nurse Practitioners, Jo McLellan and Carole
Atkinson, to the practice to provide further support to your medical care. They are experienced specialist nurses who work
in partnership with and under the guidance of your GP.
Jo and Carole are experienced, trained Nurse Practitioners who have
achieved additional higher qualifications in order to provide advanced nursing
care. Jo and Carole are also nurse prescribers.
Nurse Practitioners can provide treatment and advice for many problems for
which you may have seen a doctor in the past. Their main area of expertise is
the management of common/minor illnesses and minor injury.
The Nurse Practitioner can assess and examine you, make a diagnosis and
provide treatment and advice including a prescription if required. They can
make referrals to most hospital doctors or other health care professionals,
and admit patients into hospital where necessary. Although they are unable to
sign a sick certificate they can make arrangements for one to be signed for
you. They work closely with your GP and liaise frequently with them about your
care.

Some patients, often those with long standing medical problems may need an
appointment with a doctor. The Nurse Practitioner is usually able to assess
the situation and in some cases will organise initial blood tests and other
investigations prior to arranging a follow up appointment with their GP.

If you speak to a receptionist about the nature of your problem they will
be able to advise you as to who is the most appropriate for you.
